WISH I'D SAID THAT!

I collect quotes. I've been writing them down in a datebook for years. Some of them are profound, some inspiring, some are witty. Others are of the bumper-sticker ilk. I thought I'd share some of my favorites today. I try to track down the source, but please correct me if I'm wrong and excuse me if I don't know who originally said/wrote it. So here we go:

"Happiness is what you choose to pay attention to." -- attrituted to Janis Joplin.

"Write drunk, edit sober." --writerly advice from Ernest Hemingway

"Computers let you make more mistakes faster than any other invention in human history with the exception of handguns and tequila." --Unknown

"I am the literary equivalent of Big Mac and fries." --Stephen King

"Easy ready is damn hard writing." --Nathaniel Hawthorne

"Ever notice 'what the hell' is always the right decision?" --Unknown Hollywood screenwriter

"Until one has loved an animal, part of one's soul remains unawakened." --Anatole France

"Happiness is good health and a bad memory." --Paul Newman

"Never give yourself a haircut after three alcoholic beverages of any kind." --Rules of Life

"Not all those who wander are lost." --J.R.R. Tolkien

Okay, so these are all over the place. Quelle surprise! Do you have any favorite quotes, sayings, bumper stickers you're willing to share? We'd love to hear them!

OOO! Fun post!
I love sayings too and am enjoying the Grim Reaper series by Darynda Jones at the moment. She starts each chapter with one, and each are HILARIOUS!

Margie Lawson presented a workshop years ago and handed some out shaped like stars. I have a few still taped to my refrigerator:
The Time is Now. The Change is You.
Being on a Tightrope is Living; Everything Else is Waiting. (Karl Wallenda)

And the famous quote by Davy Crockett: You May All Go to Hell, and I Will Go to Texas.

And Dove chocolates have sayings written on the inside of their wrappers (ironically they're affirmations to love yourself...it's when I don't that I reach for Dove chocolates!)My favorite one of theirs:
Be Fearless

My favorite is "Nothing is so good that someone, somewhere, won't hate it." I have no idea who said it.

Love the Wallenda quote, Sarah! Step away from the Doves and go back to Darynda's book--more fun and no push-ups later.

I'm stealing that one, Jennette, and putting it on the wall next to my computer screen!

If only I'd collected the quotes that "spoke" to me over the years, but, no, I trusted them to memory--then failed to back it up.

One quote, however, stares at me from my bulletin board. (It's been posted to a bulletin board in every apartment/house I've lived in since college.) It's by Ben Franklin and reads: "The things which hurt, instruct."

Gosh, I'm cheerful.

Cheerfulness is over-rated, Pat. That's a very good quote.

Not all those who wander are lost. Oh, I love that one, Lark. It reminds me of writing... :)

Three favorites about writing--
Somerset Maugham: "There are three rules for writing a novel. Unfortunately no one knows what they are."
Kurt Vonnegut: "Somebody gets into trouble, gets out of it again. People love that story. They never get tired of it."
And James Thurber: "Don't get it right, get it written."

Lark Howard said...

You're right, Sheila, although when I wander while writing, often I'm lost.

Great quotes, Kay. Thurber's advice especially hits home at the moment. Reminds me of something Nora said: "You can fix anything but a blank page."

Lark, I'm late to the party but glad I didn't miss it. I love quotes, but can never remember them. LOL. I tend to pick one or two and hang on to them and think about them all year.

I don't remember them correctly, Louise, which is why I write them down. I can't tell you how badly some of my favorites have gotten mangled when I try to repeat them from memory.
